Guide to Moving – From Down Under to the UK: “Your Go-To Guide for Moving Around the World!”

by | 8 Aug 2024

Are you a construction professional considering relocating from Australia or New Zealand to the UK, but need a guide to moving? We’ve got you covered!

This is a comprehensive guide to moving, to make your transition as smooth as possible. Understanding the relocation process is crucial for a successful move, especially in the thriving construction industry of the UK.

This guide to moving will cover every aspect, from visa requirements to settling into your new life, to help you navigate this significant move.

The UK Construction Industry

The UK construction sector is one of the most robust and dynamic industries globally, contributing significantly to the economy. Key statistics indicate that the sector was worth over £110 billion and accounted for approximately 7% of GDP in recent years.

While there are similarities between the construction industries in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, notable differences exist. The regulatory environment in the UK is stricter, focusing heavily on compliance and sustainability, influenced largely by European standards. Work culture and practices also differ, with a higher emphasis on health and safety protocols, evidenced by the compulsory Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.

The market demand in the UK is promising, driven by ongoing and upcoming large-scale infrastructure projects. The sector demonstrates a strong need for skilled labour across various specialisations, making it an appealing destination for construction professionals from Australia and New Zealand.

Visa Requirements

Understanding the Visa and Immigration requirements is critical for construction professionals planning to relocate. For most of the candidates we work with from Australia and New Zealand, these are the common visas we see:

Youth Mobility Scheme Visa:

There are age and country eligibility requirements for this visa. You can apply up to 6 months before you travel and stay for up to 3 years. Different countries have different allowances, so please seek guidance on the UK Govt website for up-to-date information here.

Ancestry Visa:

If one of your grandparents was born in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man and you are a citizen of a Commonwealth country, you may be eligible for this 5-year residency visa. You can apply for this visa up to 3 months before you travel. There are other eligibility requirements so please seek guidance on the UK Govt website for up-to-date information here.

The application process involves submitting various documents, including your expected arrival date, passport, biometrics, and proof of funds. Processing times and fees can vary, so it’s advisable to start early.

Qualifications and Certifications

Qualifications from Australia and New Zealand are generally well regarded in the UK, and most qualifications can be transferred over via Ecctis. There are UK tickets you can get once you arrive (which candidates prefer to do rather than transferring trade qualifications over) which will be vital with your job search in construction.

UK-specific certifications, such as the CSCS card, which verifies your understanding of health and safety practices, are required. It is important to familiarise yourself with UK construction standards and regulations.

Finding Accommodation

Securing accommodation is a significant step in your relocation. Options include renting or buying, with short-term and long-term choices available. Popular areas for construction professionals often correlate with proximity to major construction hubs. 4Site Recruitment works alongside The Working Holiday Club who can support your transition by helping you find accommodation and a job (for Trade work through 4Site Recruitment). Aussies in London have weekly house share posts.

Settling into Life in the UK

The UK’s work-life balance, healthcare system, and educational facilities are essential aspects to familiarise yourself with.

National Insurance Number:

Every individual who works in the UK has a National Insurance Number. A National Insurance Number makes sure your national insurance contributions and tax are recorded against your name only. A National Insurance Number is a requirement to work in the UK. You can apply for your National Insurance Number here.

Self-Employment – Getting Your UTR Number:

You get a UTR number (Unique Taxpayer Reference) when you are self-employed. Your UTR number is a 10-digit number. This number is needed to file a Self-Assessment tax return online or via post. For more information, click here.

Registering with the NHS and exploring schooling options for children are critical steps. Building a social network through local clubs, organisations, and the expat community can significantly enhance your settling-in experience.

4Site Recruitment builds our social community through 4Site TRIBE and we hold quarterly events for our candidates.

With thorough planning and utilisation of resources, the transition to the UK will be smoother.
